Idukki was formed on 26 January 1972 and is one of the 14 districts of the state of Kerala. The hilly district of Idukki is rich in beautiful hills and dense forests. For the people of Kerala, Idukki is a reservoir of electricity. About 66 per cent of the state’s energy needs are generated from various hydropower projects in Idukki.

Located in the Western Ghats of Kerala, Idukki is the second largest district in the state, but it is lagging behind in terms of population density. Most of the areas of Idukki are forest land. Although the population density is high in urban areas, the population density is very low in most of the villages. Idukki is also the spice hub of Kerala.
